The Acai Berry

The acai berry is the fruit of a palm tree that grows in the Amazonian rainforest, and in Peru and Brazil.  It has been eaten for many generations in the area, and is popular throughout much of South America.  It has only recently been exported to the rest of the world, partly because of the difficulty in transporting the fruit, which spoils very quickly.

The fruit is farmed in a way which is renewable and Eco friendly.  In fact the farming of acai berries has is lead to a reduction in deforestation and provided the local people with a crop which they can profitably trade, helping them to break the circle of poverty.

This fruit has been very popular because of the very high number of nutrients which are found in the acai berry.  These include antioxidants, omega three acids, plant sterols, amino acids, proteins and vitamins.  The fact that so many diverse nutrients can be found within a single fruit is the reason why this route has been called superfood.

Each one of these nutrients is well known to have broad benefits for health, and are recommended as part of a healthy diet.  When they work together, they produce a very wide range of benefits to people.  In fact, depending on who you talk to you will hear about different health benefits as it seems to affect different people in different ways.

However, there are some common themes to these benefits that people experience.  For instance, a reduction of appetite, increase in strength and physical endurance, a feeling of more energy, better relaxation and improved skin and hair are common.

Other benefits such as a reduction of chronic pain, improved mobility, and long-term skin conditions disappearing overnight are not universal, and while there have been reported to occur, no promises can be made that they will happen to everyone that consumes this fruit.

At the moment, we don’t know the full range of beneficial effects to expect from the acai berry, simply because it hasn’t been studied scientifically for very long.  However, it has been consumed thousands of years, and is a part of tribal medicine in South America used to this day to treat a wide range of different ills. For some people in these regions, the acai berry is the largest component of their diet, and they claim is responsible for their good health.

The results from the scientific experiments that have been conducted so far are very promising - in fact, some of them are nothing short of amazing. Under laboratory conditions, acai berry pulp has even been shown to be effective against leukemia cells.  Now at this stage, it would be irresponsible to say that society is the cure of cancer, as the evidence simply is not strong enough to prove that point.  However, I think the evidence we have is strong enough to see that this fruit should be examined much more closely to work out exactly what benefits it can provide and whether it poses a genuine solution for many serious illnesses.

In the meantime, it’s a good idea to take advantage of the berry by eating them as part of your regular diet.

There are a lot of different products which are available on the market, but not all of them are as good as they should be.  The reason for this has a lot to do with when the fruit is treated.  When the fruit is harvested, is turned into a pulp and removed from the seed.  Each berry has a very large seed and a small amount of fruit on top of it, which is why it is more efficient to pulp from the fruit and remove it that way.

The consequence of pulping the fruit is that it spoils very quickly.  In fact, it will go bad within 24 hours of picking unless it is consumed or frozen.

In order to get this product to market cheaply, some companies are willing to mix powerful preservatives into the fruit, which in the eyes of many nutritionalists makes it worthless as a source of beneficial nutrients.

Other companies ultra heat treat the pulp or juice mixtures containing the pulp, which leads to damage of the complex molecules in the fruit are responsible for many of the reported benefits.

There are even claims that some companies selling acai berry products with very little or no actual acai fruit in them.  Sometimes acai capsules contain purple dyed powder to make you think that there is a large quantity of acai berry extract, when in actual fact there is almost none.

Bad practices such as these, and other scams related to tricking people into paying more money than they expected for inferior products has led to some bad press recently.  The important to recognize is that not all of the acai berry products are bad.  It’s only a few cynical individuals and companies trying to cash in on the recent acai craze that has led to this happening.

Because of all these risks, you should make sure that you only ever buy products which you know are made from pure acai pulp, which has been kept frozen has not been exposed to any additives or high temperatures.

On this site I intend to show you some of these options, and refer you to companies which can be trusted.
