Buy Acai Fruit
There are several different ways that you can buy acai, each with their own benefits, and some have drawbacks too. This page is going to cover these topics, and I will make some recommendations for you, too. I’m also going to tell you some background information so that you know why I make the recommendations I do - don’t worry, I’m not going to try to turn you into a walking acai encyclopedia!
The first thing you need to know about acai is how delicate and spoilable the fruit is. It is true that it is very powerful nutritionally, with many more times anti-oxidants than other superfood, plus omega 3 acids, vitamins, proteins, plant sterols and more. But the fact is that, from the moment it is harvested (using a process that literally pulps the fruit into a mush), the fruit will spoil within 24 hours if left to nature.
There are 3 ways to preserve the fruit. The first is to freeze the pulp. The second is to use high temperatures to preserve the fruit, and seal it in a vacuum. The final method is to add preservatives. These last 2 will preserve the flavor of the fruit, but most of the nutritional damage is ruined in the process. Therefore, I do not recommend that you buy acai berry products that have been treated this way.
For instance, most acai fruit bottled drinks are made by blending acai pulp with fruit juice, then heat treating the mixture. Sometimes, additives are added too. This is useless from the viewpoint of health, but still tastes nice.
Most juice bars buy acai pulp frozen, and mix it with the juice when you buy it. This is a great option for you, too, if you like mixing up your own smoothies. There are a couple of great companies that ship pure organic acai pulp (within the US only). They ship the pulp with “dry ice” to keep it fresh while it is in transit.
Also, acai pulp can be freeze dried to make powder. All that is lost in this process is the water, so freeze dried acai powder is essentially concentrated acai pulp. The big difference is that it doesn’t need to be kept frozen (though it is a good idea to refrigerate it). Also, this form of acai can be used in capsules. I recommend that you buy acai capsules or powder if you want to have the health benefits of acai, but convenience is more important to you than making delicious smoothies.
Also, some acai capsules contain some other blended ingredients from healthy plants such as green tea. This can really help your body make the most of the nutrients in acai, so I recommend these products very strongly when you are taking acai as part of a diet or nutritional program.
I’ve checked out a number of the different acai berry capsule products, and there is one that I think is particularly impressive. They usually run special offers, either giving you extra bottles of capsules for free with your first order, or even letting you try the product for free. This seems to depend on where you live - the product is sold internationally, so I think it is not viable to do the free trial offer worldwide.
