Organic Acai
For generations organic acai was the only kind available - until very recently, acai trees were not farmed, so acai berries were picked from the trees that grew in natural environments, in the rainforest, marshes and swamps. With the increase of popularity of the acai berry, and the other product taken from the acai tree, the “heart of palm”, these trees have become farmed. This has led to some difficulty or confusion as to whether a certain brand of acai is organic or not.
This is not to say that farming is a bad thing - acai farming is renewable, whereas harvesting wild acai is destructive to natural habitats and can cause ecological damage. Also, when the “heart of palm” is harvested from a tree, it kills it. So this can lead to deforestation when done on a large scale - but when done with farmed trees, it is much less wasteful.
The ideal is to get certified organic acai, farmed organically and renewably. This way you will be getting the goodness of organic food, and also know that the environment is protected.
Currently, there are not a lot of certified organic acai products available. Organic farming was not a priority for the first waves of acai farmers, and the demand for the product is only beginning to be heard. There are a few different companies that cell truly certified organic acai goods, and on this site I am going to link to them and give a brief overview of their product range.
